What:

Join Dorrit Geshuri and Henri Ducharme for Klezmer Jam, a monthly series open to all instruments. Our inaugural session is Sunday, April 1st, when we’ll learn a hora and a khosidl (if you don’t know, you’ll find out!). At the first class we’ll also talk about simple trills, both how to play them and when to play them. If you are a roughly intermediate player, you’ll fit right in. And bring a tape recorder. Most of the teaching will be done by ear, the old-fashioned way, although some sheet music will be given out at the end of each session.

Dorrit Geshuri has studied and played klezmer for over 10 years and is the founder the Bay Area klezmer band “The Village Yiddiots”. Her mentors include Josh Horowitz, Cookie Segelstein (Budowitz, Veretski Pass) and Jeanette Lewicki (Klez X). In an age when so much music is created as a commodity, she has turned to a folk music tradition that was meant to accompany life’s activities. Many klezmer tunes were played for specific events such as weddings, or played in the streets by wandering musicians – their melodies wafting into people’s homes. Dorrit dreams of a world where live music once again infuses our daily routines.

Classes are once a month on Sundays (usually the fourth Sunday of the month) from 12pm to 1:30pm and cost $23 per session.
