What:

Devotchka is a Denver-based quartet with a smart, unique sound that crosses borders. Sometimes billed as Eastern European indie rock, the band blends gypsy, folk, mariachi, and rock influences effortlessly. No instrument is off limits, either: violin, sousaphone, trumpet, double bass, theramin, bouzouki, and, of course, the accordion (played by Tom Hagerman) all take turns on center stage. Meanwhile, frontman Nick Urata’s haunting voice soars above it all.

DeVotchKa is Nick Urata on vocals/guitar, Tom Hagerman on accordion/violin, Jeanie Schroder on upright bass/tuba, and Shawn King on drums/trumpet.

NPR calls them "the greatest live band in New York," the New Yorker calls them a cross between "a Gypsy wedding band, the Sex Pistols, King Tubby, and Kraftwerk," and the Alternative Press says they're like "the United Nations assembled in a mosh pit."

Gogol Bordello has been breaking down musical barriers since 1999 with supercharged music based on a brutal gypsy two-step rhythm. Onstage the group ignites the crowd with a dizzying display of excitement and energy while their records feature music infused with elements of ska, punk, rap, reggae, and western twang (just to name a few).
