Name That Accordion: Old Wurlitzer

Grab your accordion identification toolkit… it’s time for another round of “Name That Accordion.” Today, reader Sherri B. has sent us some photos of an old Wurlitzer that once belonged to her great-grandfather. It’s an ornately decorated 120 bass, with a “Made in Germany” label on the back. Sherri thinks it’s from the turn of the (last) century, but that’s about all the information we have to go on. Have you seen a Wurlitzer like this one? How old is it really?

  1. Didn’t the piano accordion only start its road to prominence (in Anglo North America) after about 1910? Doesn’t seem likely to be much earlier than that. Kinda looks like the ones the Dieros played in the vaudeville days (highest paid entertainer in America) of the 1920’s.

They were around earlier though, so I hope somebody has more. I love “Name that Accordion!”

  2. interested to see this photo of a Wurlitzer as the decoration is the same as the painted and jewelled decoration on Hohner model 1055 made in 1929.

Until seeing this photo I had presumed Wurlitzer accordions were made by the same company that made Wurlitzer organs – so I wonder it there is a link between the two companies at some stage or if Hohner just gave some of the models this name? The grill would also appear to be the same as those used by Hohner.

  3. I HAVE A VERY VERY OLD ACCORDIAN THAT MUST BE ATLEAST 50ISH YEARS OLD. IT’S IN POOR CONDITIONS, BUT CAN IT BE WORTH ANYTHING? THANK YOU. 716-694-0167

  4. My father gave me an old small accordion that I played when I was young. It is a button Wurlitzer and is in original hard black case. The color is that of white pearl. It covers my chest, but does not go down to my hips. I need to find a buyer for it. I can send pic if anyone is interested. Please email me…

  5. I too have a Wurlitzer Accordian in the original black case. The color is white pearl. I need to find a buyer for it. It belonged to my Uncle who was a decorated vetran. He lost his site in WWII. He played this all the time along with many other instruments. I find it a shame to just leave it sitting in my attique. If anyone is interested I would be more than happy to send photos. You can contact me by e-mail lskinner@twcny.rr.com or by phone (315) 559-8802.
